BUSINESS, DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND USERS

Hi, I’m Karoline Strand

A creative problem solver based in Madrid,
creating value for both businesses and users

MSc Customer Experience and Innovation & BSc Product- and Systems Design

SOME OF MY PROJECTS

Project Management

Managed a cross-functional team from design freeze, production, and to launch of an accessory product for the iconic Tripp Trapp chair. The product is a convenient storage solution that easily attaches to the back of the chair. Perfect for keeping things like toys and bibs within reach for kids and parents.

Strategic Service Design

An academic project in collaboration with the Open Value Foundation to improve the learning experience for the newly established Acumen Academy program in Spain. Research showed a gap in expectations of what the users wanted the program to give them after it finished and what the program offered. Given that the users are characterized by being changemakers seeking to meet and connect with others in the same situation, the team saw an opportunity to create a community guideline to help continue creating value beyond the one-year program. Design Engineering

Responsible for designing a new brake system for a stroller chassis of a new product development project. 3D modelling in Siemens NX. SLS 3D-printing and metal work to test and iterate design solutions. Collaboration and development of production documentation with manufacturing supplier to realize designs.

HOW I WORK

The Double Diamond design process – Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver.

I follow the Double Diamond design process, Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver, developed by the British Design Council. It’s a framework that allows us to empathize with the users in order to understand the needs of who we are designing for in a structured framework of four different phases that are diverging and converging. The four different phases consist of:

  1. Discover/Research— getting insight into the problem (diverging)
User, Design, Technology, and Market Research
Interviews (user and stakeholders) and gathering insights
    Observation and Shadowing
  2. Define/Synthesis — making sense of the information and define the area to focus upon (converging)
Analysis of information and synthesis of insights
    Refine project and set deliverables
    Define “How Might We…” questions
  3. Develop/Ideation— create potential solutions (diverging)
    Ideation
    Testing & Prototyping
    Impact and Feasibility Matrix
  4. Deliver/Implementation— solutions that work (converging)
    Final Testing and Approval
    Evaluation and Further Feedback
Here an Agile framework or the Lean Startup Methodology works well

The way of working is based on the principles of:

  • Putting people first
  • Communicating visually to get a shared understanding
  • Collaboration and co-creation
  • Doing many iterations, and always reflect
  • Methods also include tools from Design Thinking, TISSD (service design), Lean Manufacturing, and Lean Start-Up.
